My Initiative to reduce hunger in Hong Kong using music

My Inspiration

Growing up in the food haven of Hong Kong, I've always found food an indispensable comfort factor. Not only do I enjoy exploring exotic tastes and ingredients in new foods, but I also always plan our meals as a family when we travel abroad. It is important for me to plan exactly what I want with my limited appetite! Though Hong Kong to many is a food haven for both the East and the West, the city still has large income gaps and a large population living in poverty and hunger.

In April 2025, I came across an South China Morning Post (SCMP) Young Post article that told a story of a family in Hong Kong who constantly struggled to meet their basic food needs. The family of five often had to skip meals to make ends meet, while the parents often chose not to eat, worried about the impacts of malnutrition on their daughters' growth. When crossing the pedestrian sky bridges in Aberdeen, I would always spot people curled up on flattened cardboard boxes, often cradling small packs of instant noodles or white bread.  These constant observations moved a part of me, and I started to notice these phenomena whenever I go: people begging for food on sidewalks, parents clasping the bony hands of their gaunt children.

I am determined and compelled to start an initiative to try and help these people, which was how Music for Hunger started.

Hunger in Hong Kong

The root cause of hunger in Hong Kong is poverty. According to the charity Oxfam, in 2024, Hong Kong's overall poverty rate reached a shocking 20.2 percent, with over 1.39 million people living in poverty. This means that 1 out of 5 people are experiencing poverty in Hong Kong. Furthermore, the wealth gap in Hong Kong has widened to 81.9 times that of the poorest decile and the wealthiest.

Causes of Food Insecurity in Hong Kong

Hunger is not just simply caused by poverty and unemployment, but is also worsened by several other issues. Hong Kong is well known for its high housing costs, consuming a large portion of low-income families' earnings, leaving less space for food.  Furthermore, a lack of job security results in easily replaceable roles being frequently changed, and people being fired for small incidents.

Impacts of Food Insecurity

Individuals may face high levels of stress, anxiety, and even depression when food is scarce.  Lack of access to nutritious food or eating meager amounts would also result in malnutrition and increased risk of chronic diseases.

About the project

Whether I'm listening to my favorite tunes or playing the piano at home, music is my creative outlet that reaches almost anyone.

Music has no boundaries.

Recently, I've started learning music production and composing my own music using Cubase, which has been so much fun. I decided to start a project that raises money, which I would donate to charities helping the hungry, by selling music I produce.
